| Description | A Union League is one of a number of organizations established starting in 1862, during the American Civil War to promote loyalty to the Union and the policies of Abraham Lincoln. They were also known as Loyal Leagues. They comprised upper middle class men who supported efforts such as the United States Sanitary Commission, which helped treat wounded soldiers after battle. The Clubs supported the Republican Party, with funding, organizational support, and political activism. The National Union League helped appoint Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency. This particular document is a signed pledge by a constituent, agreeing to give unwavering loyalty to the United States government, and to support its efforts to suppress "The Rebellion, "or the southern states involved in the Confederacy. |

I, Charles Miles hereby pledge myself to an Unconditional Loyalty to the Government of the United States, to an unwavering support of its efforts to suppress the Rebellion and to spare no endeavor to maintain unimpaired the National Unity, and to defend and perpetuate Freedom and the Union. I pledge my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor, So help me God.
