DescriptionOn either side of a trail now known as county road 500 East were clearings known in the nineteenth century as the North Prairie and the South Prairie. "Lying in between, and connecting them, the ford in the valley was an ideal place for a mill, so a man named Jacob Emerick built one there in 1838, with the help of nearby farmers. That frontier business venture eventually paved the way for a notale recreation area in what came to be called Pleasant Valley, and the road leading into tha area from the north also became the main street of a rural neighborhood called Ragtown." "Remembering McDonough County, " by John E. Hallwas.
