Subject HeadingMcDonough County--Courthouse
Description"The currrent courthouse, designed by architect Elijah E. Meyers of Springfield, was completed in 1872 at a cost of $155, 000. As the photograph here shows, the magnificent building originally had a mansard roof with numerous windows, but that roof leaked, so it was soon replaced by a pitched one. The frontispiece to this book, from a turn-of-the-century postcard, shows the later, less elegant roof style, which the courthouse retains today. Restored a quarter-century ago (1976-1978), the courthouse is now on the National Register of Historic Places." "McDonough County Historic Sites, " by John E. Hallwas, p. 10.
