| Description | "This photograph of the southeast corner of the square in 1873 shows the huge Randolph House Hotel and its livery stable. The magnificent hotel was built in 1857 by William H. Randolph, a grocer, sheriff, circuit clerk, and state legislator. Lincoln stayed there during his two visits to Macomb in 1858. His third-floor room was later regarded as a local historic site. The columned entrance was later eliminated, and in 1937, the north half of the building was torn down to make way for a Woolworth store." McDonough County Historic Sites, " by John E. Hallwas, p. 11. The original image is from Gumbart glass plate negative 5-7. The digitized image cropped, but the original and full image is available. |
