| Description | The pole to the right in the photo, inside the fence, was known as Grant's Stump. "The huge white flag pole, 163 feet high, was erected by Republicans in August of 1872, during the Grant re-election campaign, but it was destroyed by the storm on September 8. The ‘old Grant stump, " as it was called, ' remained for twenty-four years as a symbol of the party—assailed but not defeated—and often after a Republican victory it was decorated with flags and brooms. The flags represented the party that had fought to save the Union during the war—the party that thought of itself as uniquely patriotic. The brooms apparently stood for a sweeping political victory."
