Description"The first McDonough County Courthouse was built of logs in 1831, the year Macomb was laid out. It was followed by a more permanent brick structure, shown here, completed in 1835. The 11-room building was 46-feet square and cost $4, 832. In a log cabin culture, it symbolized stability and progress. This 1860s photograph, located just a few years ago, shows a ladder on the backside of the roof. Workers were either repairing the massive cupola or starting to dismantle the building to make way for the post-Civil War courthouse." "McDonough County Historic Sites, " by John E. Hallwas, p. 10. The image is from a carte-de-visite. A modern print has been made from Neg. 1305-26A, cataloged as 002944.JPG. The TIF version of the image has been made from a negative that is available. A similar image is cataloged as 002943.JPG.
