DescriptionThe photograph documents Pioneer Day, held in Macomb on August 31, 1938. The celebration marked the 150th anniversary of the establishment and settlement of the Old Northwest. As an August 26, 2003, "Macomb Eagle" newspaper article says, "That region, stretching from Ohio to Illinois and Wisconsin, was established by a federal ordinance in 1787, and the first organized group of settlers crossed the mountains into Ohio for following year. To mark the sesquicentennial of the opening of that section of America to settlement, the Northwest Territory Celebration Commission developed a caravan, featuring a covered waton pulled by oxen, which re-enacted that first trek to Ohio by the pioneers and then visited communities in other states. The caravan was compolsed of thirty-seven young men, dressed in buckskin and wearing coonskin caps, who also performed a historical pageant at their various stops. One of the young men was Hugh Runkle, a resident of Macomb."
