DescriptionThe J.B. Icking Flour Mill was located north of the Kimball boat landing and west of the stone quarry. It stood about a block from the Mississippi River before the dam at Keokuk was built. The photograph was taken sometime after the dam was completed (1912), as the water from the Mississippi River has risen close to the base of the mill. Mr. Icking was a prominent resident of Nauvoo during the latter half of the nineteenth century. He constructed several buildings in Nauvoo, including the Oschner building, which was located across from the Nauvoo State Bank. The second floor of this building was used as a classroom for training servicemen who were drafted for World War I. Several Nauvoo residents made bets on the direction the Icking Flour Mill would fall. However, these persons had all died by the time the chimney fell in 1922.
