DescriptionFrom a p.c., 1910. Surprise Lake. Other images of Lake Surprise cataloged as 001551.JPG and 001550.JPG Lake Surprise was located on the northeast quarter of section 2, Prairie City Township, just west of Prairie City. This lake was built in 1887 to provide ice for Prairie City, but by 1900 it was used for recreational purposes. A 1902 article in the Macomb Journal describes the lake as having boats, an ice house, and picnic grounds. It was the damming of Gallett Creek that formed Lake Surprise. The lake no longer exists (2004). Information from McDonough County Gazetteer by Gordana Rezab. Image mailed November 15, 1910, by Mrs. Will Westfall. Taken by Marshall?
