This lake was built in 1887 to provide ice for Prairie City, but by 1900 it was used for recreational purposes. A 1902 article in the Macomb Journal describes the lake as having boats, an ice house, and picnic grounds. It was the damming of Gallett Creek that formed Lake Surprise.
