| Description | As found with the documentation: SURGICAL HEMISPHERECTOMY NA 429-51 This 7 year old colored boy was said ' been normal until 8 months of age when, after a 2-week illness of the upper respiratory'developed convulsions and showed signs of mental retardation. He was seen at several different hospitals with no definite diagnosis being made. He developed a left hemiplegia...discharge from one of the hospitals. His condition remained static for about 5 years, two mo... to admission here , when he began hitting his head with his hands. He was admitted here...treatment. On admission...nd to be markedly retarded and to have a left spastic hemiparesis. Pneumoencephalograms...ted as showing bilateral hydrocephalus, most marked on the right. A right cerebral hemispher...was done. The patient did poorly after operation. There was marked accumulation of cerebro... fluid in the right cranial cavity with increased intracranial pressure. In spite of drainage the fluid continued to accumulate and the intracranial pressure remained high. He died 65 days after operation, 99(?) days after admission and 8(?) years after...ptoms. At necropsy he was found to have a hydrocephalus with evidence...eased pressure in that the bone flap was displaced outward and there was flattening of the gyri(?) of the left cerebral hemisphere. He also had an acute bronchitis and bronchopneumonia as contributing factors. |
