NA 12/53 58 yr. old white woman Jan. 1953 About 8 weeks before admission to INI, this woman deveolped a productive cough with blood streaked sputum. This was followed by frontal headaches. As the headaches became more severe, she became confused, disoriented and finally semi-stuporous. X-rays revealed an increased density in the right upper pulmonary lobe and shift of the pineal body to the right. Left subtemporal decompression and exploration revealed a brain abscess filled with thick green purulent material. Smears revealed gram-positive branching filaments of the genus NOCARDIA.
