Dunham in New Voodoo Dance Drama
KATHERINE DUNHAM'S fa- miharity with West Indian voodoo at firsthand is an oft-told tale in her home town, for it was on a traveling scholarship from the University of Chicago that she made the investigations of the West Indies jungles that she since has turned to artistic account.
On her return to Chicago for two weeks at the Studebaker The¬ ater Jan. 22, she will offer in her- "Tropical Revue" a new voodoo number called "L'Agya, " de- • scribed as a climax in her crea-
"L'Agya" takes its title from the spectacular wrestling bout ot French Martiilique, now publicly banned there because ot its not infrequently fatal outcome for one or both the participants.
The production is in three scenes, one "vaudun" (voodoo) ritual straight out of the West In¬ dian sugar cane jungles, complete with priests or "zombies" who weave their spells around the sinister shrine of the Black Vir¬ gin.
Also in the drama are the fa¬ mous "begine begihe, " the true and naughty' beguine of Marti¬ nique, and the Majumba, a dance of hypnosis associated with evil and directly connected with the practice of voodoo.
"L'Agya" itself is a fighting dance, performed as an exhibition of skill and masculine prowess, or to settle a grudge. Its origins are lost in the darkness of the African |
