Katherine Dunham's Muse Born of Ancient Ethiopia
Katherine Dunham's Muse Born of Ancient Ethiopia
TitleKatherine Dunham's Muse Born of Ancient Ethiopia
CreatorBulliet, C. J.
DescriptionThis clipping is only a torn-portion of the full article. The author describes the performance of Dunham and her "Negro Troupe" as a hearkening to ancient Ethiopia, as opposed to modern Ethiopia, expresses his support for the idea that ancient Ethiopians were "of the race of Katherine Dunham and her entertainers", and makes a point of Dunham's academic credentials and Joliet, Illinois origin. He makes a distinction between Dunham's art and what he considers to be the more standard tradition of "American Negro entertainment", which he describes as being either "mostly comic, tragically sentimental, " or "that which certain "advanced" artists of the race... [article is torn here]" but hastens to disclaim over-intellectualism. He assures the reader that her show is not bogged down in the dignity of the ancient culture it hearkens to, describing it as "thoroughly entertaining in the careless atmosphere of the present day cabaret".
