| Transcript | Katherine Dunham and group The Art Institute presented Katherine Dunham and dance group NoTember 29j JO, Eeoember 1 and 2 at the Goodiran Theatre, From a theatrical standpoint the program was very stimulating. Costumes, lighting, musio and arrangement of the program were all skillfully executed. The most successful numbers were the Haitian, Boogie-Woogie, and the Rhumbas, those deriving from the folk. One felt in numbers like the Peruvian and Spanish Tableaux - though pictorially quite beau¬ tiful * perhaps a superficial ap¬ proach. This was never felt in the primitive numbers. The Ballet BRER RABBIT AND DE TAH BABY was a surprise all the v/ay through, Talley Beatty shone as Brer Rabbit and Miss Dunham's Tah Baby - especially the "Ballin the Jaok^ number - was delightful. The square dance, with Miss Dun- ham calling from a microphone backstage, was utterly swell [ The group as a whole worked with m.uoh enthusiasm and skill. The work of Archie Savage and a Hait¬ ian drummer who was not mentioned on the program was particularly commendable. And neither we, nor apparently the rest of the audience, will ever forget "Barrelhouse, '^ as effective a piece of "Le Jazz Hot as we've seen, B. and T, |
