Katherine Dunham Will
Make First Appearance
in Home Town.
An interpreter of the aance? and rhythms of her own people. Miss Katherine Dunham, fore¬ most colored danseuse who danced two seasons with the Chicago opera company, will per¬ form for her old home town for the first time next Thursday night in the Joliet High school auditorium.
Miss Dunham attributes muchl of lier success to the Joliet High, school and Junior college from which she was graduated. FinlKh- ing high school in :92e, ahe com-' pleted her Joliet Junior college course in 1928 and went to the University of Chicago from which she received her bachelor's degree. With it, she received a Rosenwald travel fellowship which she used in the study of anthropology in the West Indies. She studied native dances at their source and has perfected a ballet which will form the back¬ ground for her first Joliet ap¬ pearance.
The program next Thursday night is sponsored hy the Busi¬ ness and Professional Woman's club which will formally intio duce her to Joliet where she wa'! bom. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dunham 112 South Joliet street.
Miss Dunham opened the dance series for the Chicago Art in'iti tute last October in Goodm ir theater and with her ballet has appeared in many Chicago dance programs.
Her interest in dancing, she says, dates from her high scliool days when she was a student of Mrs, Phoebe Kirby. "1 feel that the high school generally and Mrs. Kirby particularly, are largely responsible for my car¬ eer, " said Miss Dunham yester- i- day in the bome of her parents. "1 was encouraged in high scIiool, became a member of the Terpsi- choreans, a sort of "lionor" soci¬ ety for dance pupils, and from the start I received there, I con¬ tinued my interest in and study of, dancing."
