Joliet Colored Dancer Scores Hit at Chicago
Miss Katherine Dunham, a graduate of tlie Joliet High school and of Joliet Junior col¬ lege in 1928, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albeit Dunham, 408 South Joliet street, new distinctions last night at a j dance recital in Chicago, where she interpreted Haitian cere¬ monial dances.
The young colored woman who played an important part in high school and Junior col¬ lege terpsichorean activities, went to Haiti on a Ronsenwald travel fellowship to study and collect native dances of the island.
At Goodman Theater
With a group of young danc¬ ers, the Joliet girl appeared 1 the recital sponsored hy the medical bureau of the American Friends of Spanish Democracy for the benefit of child victims of the Spanish Civil War. The program was given in Goodman theater.
Miss Dunham won commen¬ dation for her demonstration of the roysteiy and primitive r
actions woven into her move¬ ments and for the impassive ex¬ pressions which characterize the native dances.
