| Transcript | A cold shooting Southern team fell flat before the Washington U Bears of St. Louis, 64-44, Wednesday night in the Bears' lair. The Salukis, starting their combination of Doss, Blythe, Whitlock, Johnson and Morgan, sunk a dismal total of three baskets the first half but added 14 freethrows to trail only 26-20 at halftime. The Bears were decidedly short of the rim also as their meager total shows for the first half. The Salukis led once at the 11- minute mark with a 7-5 count but that was short-lived and, the Holdermen never saw the top again. Cristal led the Bear attack with 130 points, not quite half of the total, while Gus Doss dumped 16 to head the Southern aggregation. The first 8 minutes of the second half really put the clincher on as Wash. U. outscored the Salukis 21-6. This was the only lapse of Southern's defense. Washington's defense put the Salukis to shame, as the middle was dogged up and Southern was forced to repeatedly shoot from far out. The rebounding as also monopolized by Washington as the SIU hoopsters had probably their worst outing to date. Fouls slowed the Southern Five some as Doss. Blythe and Morgan all had three fouls On them at halftime. However no one fouled out the entire game for either club. The Salukis meet western Illinois tomorrow to move back into IIAC competition. Totals on the game. |
