Leo Wilson, lithe football end and hurdler, received the ninth annual Henry Hinkley award as the outstanding Southern athlete of
1953-54..
The third straight track man to win the award, Wilson was captain of this year's track squad which went undefeated in dual meets, won the State College meet, and finished third in the IIAC. Phil Coleman and Dick Gregory won the award the last two years.
Letter winners of the past year selected Wilson during the all-sports banquet Tuesday night.
"Leapin'" Leo began his Saluki grid career as a halfback but has been a fast, clusive, glue-fingered end the last two seasons. The combination of Wilson and Wayne Williams gave Southern one of the best pair of receivers in the conference.
This spring Wilson set a new school record in the high hurdles, skimming over them in 15.1. He was undefeated in the high and low hurdles in seven meets before the conference meet and was leading the pack then for the second straight year until he hit a hurdle near the finish.
Wayne Grandcolas, president of most valuable baseball player by his teammates. The 6-3 slugger hit.360 during the regular season and played errorless ball in left field. Williams led the football team in pass receiving last fall.
Wayne Grandcolas, president of the I Club, presented trophies to Williams, most valuable football player Leroy Seville. and most valuable basketball player Jacque Theriot.

presented the Henry Hinkley Memorial award at the all sports banquet Tuesday night.
