Alpha Kappa Alpha fosters high scholastic, cultural and ethical standards among college and university women as its aims.
The officers of the SIU chapter are: Ida Childress, president; Christine McKinnie, vice-president; Laverna Cornelians, recording secretary; Malinda Ballinger, corresponding secretary; Iantha Brown, treasurer.
Lovenger Hamilton, dean of pledges; Evelyn Coleman, reporter; Jevelar McBride and Lucille Walker, graduate advisors.
Charter members of the chapter are Doris James, Cairo; Janetta Hickman, Carbondale; and Gwendolyn Holliday, Cairo.
