The Negro, ruthlessly tossed around in the sea of chaotic circumstances. has survived because of his immortal faith, dogged determination, and keen sense of humor. No other race has experienced in one thousand years the changes which forced upon the Negro in three hundred. After three centuries of pain, slavery, abrupt emancipation. disillusionment. and total insecurity. the Negro still has a faith in Cod anti man beyond cornpar son. This faith has taken hipi into two major wars before, and today finds him engaged in a third.L undaunted by acts of segregation and discrimination -— even in the American armed forces—the dark man tights on. The sense of humor, born of cultural devastation, serves him today as it served his chained ancestors before him. Laughing with an ironic humor which will not die, the Negro is giving his life that the principles of American democracy might live.
Not all brown Americans are engaged in military warfare, however. Some are engaged in a domestic warfare which is giving stubborn opposition. Already they
have opened a second front in America—a front dedicated to the liberation of the dark races. They are fighting for the total abolition of second class Citizenship in the United States. The Amencall Negro on tile home front has
accepted the challenge to use to have been ahead. With a determination acquired after three hundred years
of chronic privation, the dark man moves on—even though brutal lynch murder is sometimes the result. The strength of unity has at last been discovered by a people whose jealousy anti stupidity have been used against them. Now tile Negro stands, 110 longer a symbol of ignorance. to challenge his oppressors with he weapons of their choice. At last the power of pressure politics is known. and 15, 000, 000 brown Americans are learning to use it to their own advantage.
The struggle for equality will be a lolig and hard one. it is not to be expected that old ensWills and traditional attitudes will change quickly, but it is expected that America will continue in its march toward democracy. Many obstacles will be placed in the way. but they must of necessity be ovc"eoine. Poll-tax, labor discontinuation. civil injustice, and in-
adequate educational facilities are only a few of the sins committed against the Negro. They are only a few or the hurdles on the beaten track of life over which the Brown American lutist run.
The American life is the Only life the Negro has known or remembers. This very thing he has loved has for three centuries at tempted to destroy him, and For three centuries he has shown only a passive resistance to this attempt. Today things are different. The Negro is ready, willing, and able to tight with every legal, technical, and practical weapon known to the political world. Now he demands what is rightfully his. Society moves ahead, and the Negro is determined to move ahead with it. With an age old determination, these native-horn Americans fight for total emancipation. they know that if America perish, they will perish. On the other hand, however, it is known that no country can reach its full strength with one-tenth of its people kept from free growth and wide opportunity. while this country is engaged in the light to liberate the oppressed people of Europe, the Negro tends to show that charity still begins at home.
