—Some of us were asked last week by Dr. Eddy just what the Negro wanted today. The question itself was as old as the American Negro: the answer was equally ancient. The Negro desires today those things which were desired yesterday, and will be desired and expected tomorrow—Etuality and Justice!
Too often it is assumed that we desire some special status. It has been said that we wanted pity, concessions, and "social" equality. These things are not true. We recognize no social inferiority, or any inferiority because of our race. We, as a people, possess abilities as great as any other people. What we want is an equal chance to exercise those abilities. We want no status other than the full measure of American Citizenship.
