| Transcript | Boydston Selects Bardo Athletes Get Ex-Saluki As Academic Counselor By Dave Palermo Most clleges and universities have had academic counselors for student athletes for many years to keep the athletos in good academic standing and to assure that they graduate. 5IU finally took a step in the same direction when the University hired Harold Bardo, 28. a 1962 SIU graduate and former Saluki trackman and basketball player, as Academic Counselor to Intercollegiate Athletics. "I've been considering hiring someone for the position for several years, '' aald Athletic Director Donald Boydston, "All the major colleges and universities have one. "We have an excellent percentage of athletics who graduate, " he continued, "but we don't feet we've done enough, " Dardo, a native of Sparta, has been an area manager for Graflcx, Inc, , at Breckinridge Job Corps Centor, Morgonfield, Ky. Bardo's job will be to keep SIU'b athletes in good academic standing and to maintain close contact with the school's academic faculty. "I'd classify my duties in three major categories, " said Bardo, "Firstly, I'd get all the athletes together as a group and describe my position; secondly, I'd attempt to explain the procedure in reglate ring for classes; and thirdly, I'd counsel the students on cboosing courses to take and applying their aptitudes and Interests to the various courses, " "I'm very interested in this kind of wort, " said Dardo, "I know when I went to college the counselors didn't take the time with me that I needed. I'm going to concentrate on giving the students good descriptions of the courses and educating them on what to exspect from the courses, '' Boydston mentioned that there were several applicants for the position. Dardo, a Negro, was selected, Boydaton said, because he has a good academic background, on SIU degree, on athletic background and halls from the southern Illinois area. Bardo holds a graduate degree In counscling. Harold Is the type person that is ideal for the pooition, " said Doydsion, "He was a capable student as an undergraduate with preparation in English and history and his graduate work haa been in guidance and educational psychology, '' "Every coach will work with the academic counselor on particular problems concerning students and Mr. Bordo will then take whatever action is definitely necessary, " Bardo is married and has three children. At the Job Corps Center he was involved tn planning, directing, developing, administering and implementing a training program for resident Job corpsmen. |
