TranscriptBenson Stars in 440 gainst Stiff Competition

Chuck Benson ran his best 440-yard race of the season and a limited Saluki track squad fared well against tough competition in ihe Drake Relays over the weekend.
In addition to Benson, who won the 440 Invitational, John Vernon was second in triple jump, and the mile relay team made a fine showing.
Benson turned in a time of 46.7 seconds in the 440, beating such big name competitors aa Mike Mundane of Iowa, who waa third In last year's NCAA meet, and Robert Johnson of Southern University, another nationally ranked quartermiler.
"Benson ran a real smooth race, '' Coach Lew Hartzog said. "He held his positian well throughout the race up until he moved in front in the final stretch."
Rose MacKenzie finished fifth In the quarter mile, although bothered by a bad cheat cold and a high temperture.
"If Ross would have been in top shape, I believe he would have finished just behindChuck (Benson)." Hartzog said.
MacKenzie's cold also bothered him during the mile relay, although he still ran a fine :47.4 race. The relay team ran the mile in 3:12, but this was not good enough to advance SIU to the finals in the event. Lamar Tech, which eventually finished second in the mile relay, defeated the Salukis.
Vernon had whot Hartzog termed a "great series of jumps". In the triple jump competition, he set a new SIU record with a leap of 51 feet, 8 3/4 inches. At the time of the leap, this was a new Drake Relays record, but his fame was fleeting. The record lasted only 25 minutes.
Lennox Burgher of Nebraska tied Vernon's mark on his first jump. On his next leap, Burgher jumped 52 feet 11 inches, for an NCAA record, although like Vernon's record, it last only a few minutes, Aaron Hopkins of Toledo leaped 53 feet, 5 1/4 inches in the Penn Relays for the current NCAA record.
Much Livingston, with a knee still bothering him, could
manage only a 6-7 high jump and did not advance to the finals In that event.
In other action at Drake, Kansas record-setting miler Jim Ryun, who the Salukis will meet this weekend in an AIU Kansas dual meet, had a mediocre day on Friday, and sat out Saturday's action because he was "just too tired."
Ryun ran a modest 1:48.2 ono-half, mile leg In anchoring the Kansas team to a two-mile relay victory Friday, but ran a very slow, 4:07 mile for the winning Kansas distance medley relay team.
The Salukis will face the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday in Manhatien in a dual meet. Kansas detentcd SIU by 70 points in an indoor track meet during the winter.
