SIU won its second straight Governor's Tournament trophy, although the journey was cut short because of rain. Jerry Bond was named the most valuable player.
Bond, a sophomore from Waukegan, was on base four of the eight times he came to the plate, and stole three baecs in leading SIU to two victories Friday, the only games his team played.
The last two games scheduled for Saturday, one involving SIU, were cancelled because of a steady rain throughout the afternoon,
Bond, a 5-10 cenierfielder, collected two singles, drew a base on halls, was hit by a pitch and scored three of the five Saluki runs of the tournament.
SIU placed four on the 11-man All-Tournament team. Joining Bond Were catcher Bob Sedik, first baseman Bob Blakely and pitcher Howie Nickason.
Sedik played only one game, bot got a single and double in three trips to the plate and scored a run. Blakely collected a single and a double In six trips to the plate and played a fine defensive first base. Nickason was named on the basis of his relief job after SIU starter Bob Ash ran into trouble in the Salukis' first game of the tournament, Nickason relieved Ash with two men on base and only one out and the score tied 1-1.
Ash retired the next two men without any runs scored and went on to retire all 14 men he faced, striking out seven.
Pitching was the key to SIU's victory. In addition to
Nickason's fine Job, Skip Pitlock pitched a one-hitter for SIU, striking out 10.
SIU hitters collected 13 hits in the two games, scored five runs, but left 14 men on base.
The final records of the teams in the tournament were: SIU, 2-0; Air Force, 2-1; Concordia, 0-1 and Moorhcad State, 0-2.
