TranscriptCindermen Move From Last To First Place

Coach Lew Hartzog's cindermen copped their first IIAC track title in history Saturday by piling up a margin of 16 points over their nearest rival, Central Michigan, in an afternoon that saw five conference' records shattered and a host of stadium and school marks broken.
Depth in the distance runs proved the strong point for Southern's tracksters. The Salukis romped home with second, third and fourth place honors in the mile. In the two mile, it was a one, three, four for 3outhern as freshman Joe Thomas bettered the conference and stadium records.
Southern finished in last place in the 1960 conference meet. In his first season as:
coach, Hartzog shaped up his raw material into the championship caliber displayed Saturday in taking the title.
Records Fall
The Salukis accounted for three of the record set Saturday. Discus man Ted Farmer bettered the IIAC mark of 155—4½ by six inches. John Saunders turned in 1:52.6 for the half mile, tying the conference mark. Thomas' 9:15.3 dropped the record by about six seconds.
Polishing off the afternoon performances, the mile relay team of Larry Evans; Bonnie Shelton,
John Saunders and Sonny Hocker lowered the school, conference and stadium marks with a time of 3:14.5. This topped the mark set by the Saluki
Track Club earlier this year of 3:15.6 by Jim Dupree, Hocker, Dave and Don Styron. "Every boy
did his best, " said Hartzog, "we even picked up points we weren't planning on."
"All Guts"
Ranked with the fourth best time in the field for the half mile, Saunders raced his way to blue ribbon honors and a tie:
for the IIAC record. Boxed into a third slot on the first turn of the second lap, John kept to the outside. On the straight away he moved into the second position to challenge for the lead going into the last turn. Barreling out of the curve John poured on the steam "all guts, " said Hartzog as Saunders snapped the tape with bet. ter than a 10-foot lead.
Dennis Harmon and Jerry Eskoff went one-two in the javelin to match the first place finish of teammate Farmer in the discus.
Going into the final broad jump, Jim Gualdoni was in third place. His last-jump efforts squeezed him into a second place finish, one-quarter of an inch ahead of his rival. Jim's jump was good for 22-3.
