| Transcript | Charlie Vaughn Smashes Saluki Great Breaks Bryson's Scoring Record Of 1, 535 Points Southern whipped Illinois State. 95-51. Friday night in the SIU Men's Gym but the spotlight was on Saluki Charlie Vaughn who shattered the all-time SIU career scoring mark. "I didn't even know I was that close." remarked the elaied Vaughn. Needing only 12 pints, as the started the game, the fabulus bager swished the net with his sixth field goal of the evening with 4:29 remaining in the first half. Game Stopped For Award The game was immediately halted at that point and SIU Coach Harry Gallatin and former Saluki great Seymour Bryson met "Sweet Charlie" at midcourt. At this time the public address announcer told the crowd that Vaughn had just eclipsed the old Saluki standard of 1, 533 points set by Bryson from 1955-'59. Seymour then presented Charlie with the game ball. It took Seymour. a former all-state prep star at Quiney and now a graduate student at Southern, four years to achieve his feat. And now everybody's Little All-Ameilcan candidate, former Tamms. Ill. prepace Vaughn had erased his mark in less than two and onehalf years. Missed Six Games Vaughn collected 620 and 77 points respectively in his first two seasons with the Salukis. charlie had missed the first six games this season due to scholastic difficuities. |
