| Transcript | Bryson Leads Southern Against Huskies In Home Finale Saturday Harry Gallatin's flying' Salukis close their most point-productive year tomorrow night against IIAC foe Northern Illinois. In 24 games this season Gallatin's fast-breaking, protype of defense has produced 2, 120 points, largest in SIU history, to maintain an 88.2 averrge per game. Southern has posted a 16-8 mark. and are in second place in the IIAC with 8-3. Charlie Vaughn. freshman from Tamms. continues his vicious assault on the record books. The rookie forward has set a new single-season scoring mark of 580 points—a 24.1 average. Vaughn is the first SIU player to score more than 500 points in one season. Captain Seymour Bryson, Quincy senior, in his last home game tomorrow night, is second with 478 points for a 19.9 average. Dick Ruggles is next in point production with 182, Jim Gualdoni, 181, Don Hepler, 133 and Tom McGreal, 127, round out the top six in scoring. Bryson is also leading in rebounds. He has collected 254 off the boards for a 11 a game average. Vaughn is close behind with 231. Southern, tightening up on defense in the past few games, has allowed the opposition 1, 871 points for a 77.9 per game average—much better than the 80- plus they allowed most of the season. Jim Gualdoni is leading the team in field goal percentage with a 50 per cent average. Jim has hit 77 field goal percentage with a 50 per cent average. Jim has hit 77 field goals in 144 attempts. The scramble with Northern tomorrow night will be a tough one for Gallatin's Salukis. SIU defeated the Huskies, who fought down to the final gun recently at DeKalb, 80-78 on Don Hepler's last-second tip-in. Last week Northern pulled a big upset by pouncing on Western Illinois, defending IIAC cage champ. Southern will then be idle until the regional tourney at Evansville on Friday, March 6, when they take on Belmont-Abbey of South Carolina in the NCAA College finals. Evansville and the University of Akron are the two other entries in the four-team meet. |
