| Description | A bucket wheel excavator/ cross pit spreader at work moving overburden. Side of excavator reads "Fidelity Mine, W5 Wheel Excavator". Freeman United Coal Mining Company, Fidelity mine, near DuQuoin, Perry County. "A "wheel" type of machine which digs the soil and rock, which is called the overburden and deposits it onto a conveyor belt which then takes it to the opposite side of the cut (left). The small coal loading shovel scoops up the coal and loads it onto transport trucks. The wheel has the advantage of being able to deposit the rock on the spoil bank and then covering it up with top soil, so it is both a stripping and a reclamation machine." and "W-4" written on verso. |
