DescriptionTableau 21. Collection of items owned by Prince Maximilian. Depicted items include a painted bison hide or robe illustrated with military exploits of Mandan chief, Mato-Tope. Pipe of Mandan warrior-chief Dipauch, an ermine skin pounch, an elk-antler quirt, a bird-bone war whistle thought to belong to Mato-Tope, an otter-skin pouch with quillwork and beads, a tobacco pouch from skin of a white skunk, a "conquest bundle" (Hidatsa), a knife and sheath, and a Mandan snowshoe.

SourceKarl Bodmer's Illustrations to Prince Maximillian of Wied-Neuwied's Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-34. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels. These illustrations include 81 plates of aquatints.
