Mrs. Eugene B. Read, wife of Rev. E.B. Read, passed away suddenly Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.C. Peaslee of Oak Park.
Mrs. Read was born Nov. 7, 1838, in Hinsdale, Mass. Her father, John Putnam, moved with his family to central Illinois in 1856. On Nov. 7th 1861 she married Rev. Mr. Read. In Sept. 1880, they came to Lockport, where Rev. Read became pastor of the Congregational church. They remained here for several years, then moved to Chicago and west. Returning to Lockport Rev. Read was again pastor of the local church. Since giving up the pastorate, a number of years ago, they have made their home with their daughter, Mrs. James Milne, and family of East 7th street. Mrs. Read was a beautiful character and was beloved by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, four daughters and one son, Mrs. James A. Milne, of Lockport; Mrs. H.C. Peaslee, of Oak Park; Mrs. G.H. Rogers, of Wheaton; Mrs. H.J. Bell, of Aurora, and Elmer B. Read, of Lombard; two brothers, Walter Putnam, of Carthage, Mo., and James Putnam, of Rosemond.
The remains were brought to Lockport Monday afternoon and the funeral was held at 2:30 in the Congregational church, Rev. E. E. Frame, pastor of the church and Rev. W.E. King, former pastor, officiated. Interment was in the Lockport cemetery.
