OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
GALESBURG, ILLINOIS
DAVID P. LINDBERG, MAYOR May 8, 1944.

Mrs. L. O. Harris,
615 East Fifth Street,
Galesburg, Illinois.

Dear Mrs. Harris:

I am in receipt of a letter from the Sew and So Club, a colored
club in the City of Galesburg. This letter came from the Presi-
dent and Secretary, Mrs. Mamie Green and Mrs. Mary Rhybon, res-
pectively.

I quote from the letter as follows: "In line with Governor Green's
request and following the example of other Illinois cities, we urge
you to appoint a non-political, Inter-racial committee for Gales-
burg. Of course, we already have such a committee functioning
under our local Council of Churches, but we think the matter im-
portant enough for of icial action..." All this being so, we request
an official Inter-racial Committee here which would work
with the State Committee."

As Secretary of the Council of Churches you are acquainted with
the members serving on the present committee, set up through the
council of Churches.

If you feel that these people on this committee have been satisfactory
and have performed the duties of this committee to the
best of their ability, you may consider this my official approval
and appointment to serve as an Official Inter-racial committee in
the City of Galesburg in Cooperation with the State Committee.

Yours very truly,

DPL:C David P. Lindberg, Mayor
