DescriptionCaption associated with original photo reads: "Wreck which occurred at the west switch in Galesburg yards on February 16, 1885. Passenger train No. 6 was coming in with a double-header, because of a snow blockade, and collided with a switch engine standing on the track. Four engines were piled together in a mass of wreckage and the fireman, John McCarty of Galesburg, was killed. The temperature was 25 degrees below zero, making the work of rescue [illegible}."
