| Description | Part of the "Historía de Nicaragua" (History of Nicaragua) mural project, this is the central mural located over the altar in the Santa Maria de los Angeles Church in Barrio Riguero in Managua, Nicaragua. There are multiple themes presented within this one mural. Christ is resurrected, with a peasant headband; people of the pueblo and guerrilla soldiers are carrying the cross of "imperialist oppression;" Mothers of the disappeared are off to the right holding photos of their loved ones and martyrs; there is harvesting of sugar up above. Also above is nature with the national flower, the sacuanjoche, and the dove of peace. Above to the right are children playing in a circle and the liberation of women is to the left of the cross. The murals painted in this building were part of a project by Italian muralist Sergio Michilini, who led a team of Italians to train and teach Nicaraguan artists muralism. There were twenty-two Nicaraguan students and four foreign students that helped with the murals in this church. Henry Houser notes, "all of the people present [in the murals] were outspoken critics of imperialist intervention, many were martyred or killed in guerrilla activity. Many are clergy two are Indigenous. A couple are symbols of liberation theology. Also present are Sandino, the FSLN and Fonseca." |
