[Romero of Central America lives among us]
[Romero of Central America lives among us]
Title[Romero of Central America lives among us]
DescriptionThis mural is painted on a concrete structure which serves as a stage. The artists, Salvadorian refugees, painted the mural with help from Christians in the local barrio where a Christian base community lives. The barrio (neighborhood) is called La Esperanza. This mural commemorates the assassination of Archbishop Romero, who stands holding his arms out as if on a cross, then lying on the ground, slain. In the center there are four people in a mass grave. Archbishop Romero was assassinated in El Salvador for speaking out against the El Salvadoran dictatorship. The mural shows a group of people standing in support of Romero with a poster at the back saying "If they kill me, I will rise again in my people.", and another, "Romero lives among us." Posters announcing the celebration of the 10th anniversary were pasted on it and then removed leaving behind some pieces of paper still adhering to the wall, thus marring the mural.
