William H. Wilder
William H. Wilder
TitleWilliam H. Wilder
DescriptionWhen President Adam's health made it apparent that he would not be able to return to office at the end of his leave of absence, the Board of Trustees elected Rev. William H. Wilder -- one of Adam's closest friends, whom he had suggested to be his successor -- president in 1888. At the time, Wilder held the position of the Presiding Elder of the Decatur District of the Methodist Church. At the age of 34, he was one of the youngest men to hold that position. Wilder became the fifth President of IWU, and the first Wesleyan alumnus to become President of his alma mater, an office which he held until 1898.
