Edgar M. Smith
Edgar M. Smith
TitleEdgar M. Smith
DescriptionRev. Edgar M. Smith, a graduate of Connecticut Wesleyan, who was serving as the head of the Montpelier Seminary in Vermont, was named the sixth President of IWU in 1898. Because he had "speedily freed" the Montpelier Seminary of a $30, 000 debt, the Trustees thought Smith was aptly qualified to provide the "debt-ridden Wesleyan" with the same service, a service which he -- due to no lack of effort on his part -- was unable to fulfill. Smith held the office of President until 1905.
