Samuel J. Fallows
TitleSamuel J. Fallows
DescriptionRev. Samuel J. Fallows, was born in England, and immigrated to Wisconsin with his family in 1848, where he joined the Methodist Church at the age of 19. He studied at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and at the University of Wisconsin. Fallows was Vice-President and Principal of Galesville University for two years, and then joined the Union Army in 1862 and served as the chaplain for the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry, but then he left the next year to serve as Professor-elect of Natural Sciences at Lawrence. In 1871, when the previous state superintendant of schools died, Fallows accepted an appointment to the position. He reorganized and strengthened the state school system and was twice re-elected as Wisconsin State Superintendant, a position which he left in order to become IWU's third President in 1873 in order to teach, "where the student body, composed largely of ambitious farmer boys and girls, was the kind of unspoiled human material with which he loved to work." He served as President of IWU until 1875.
