BOWL
Title
BOWL
Case Location
0094
Cultural Affiliation
Hopi
CA details
1st
Mesa
Date of Manufacture
ca.
1870-1880
Description
The
exterior
of this
rectangular
bowl
has a
spirit
line
around
the
rim
and at the
bottom.
Between
these
is
a
variant
of the
Zuni
lotemla
wohanapa
(all
different
kinds
of
feathers
hang
down)
motif.
The
rectangular
shape
of the
bowl
may
be
due
to the
potter's
intent
to
represent
the
four
directions
,
north
,
south
,
east
and
west
,
rather
than the
more
common
round-shaped
bowls
which
represent
the
world.
The
interior
rim
of the
bowl
is
decorated
with a
band
of
crescents
,
perhaps
an
adaptation
of the
Zuni
wetolianne
(zigzag)
band
that here would
represent
alialaye
(waves).
Beneath
this
is
a
spirit
line
, and
rest
of the
interior
of the
bowl
is
decorated
with
one
of the
many
Zuni
rain
bird
motifs.
