DescriptionThis medium-sized, hollow body owl effigy (probably a Great Horned Owl), has a painted speckled head, molded eyes surrounded with red paint around the right eye & brownish-orange paint around the left. The molded beak is painted brownish-black with traces of red around the upper edge and right side & brownish-orange paint on the left. The upper part of the body has painted feather elements. Effigy owls such as this were made for the commercial market, both in the time period of this piece and still today, but were also placed by the Zuni in crooks of trees and above house entrances to protect against evil spirits.
