Description
This
medium-sized
,
hollow
body
owl
effigy
(probably
a
Great
Horned
Owl)
, has a
painted
speckled
head
,
molded
eyes
surrounded
with
red
paint
around
the
right
eye
&
brownish-orange
paint
around
the
left.
The
molded
beak
is
painted
brownish-black
with
traces
of
red
around
the
upper
edge
and
right
side
&
brownish-orange
paint
on the
left.
The
upper
part
of the
body
has
painted
feather
elements.
Effigy
owls
such
as this were
made
for the
commercial
market
,
both
in the
time
period
of this
piece
and
still
today
, but were also
placed
by the
Zuni
in
crooks
of
trees
and
above
house
entrances
to
protect
against
evil
spirits.
