PITCHER
Title
PITCHER
Case Location
0041
Cultural Affiliation
Zuni
Date of Manufacture
ca.
1880
Description
Although
the
crenellated
[i.e.
, the
step-type
of
formation
commonly
seen
at the
tops
of
castles]
rim
on this
pitcher
is
typical
of
Zuni
prayer
meal
bowls
,
it
is
an
unusual
element
on a
pitcher.
So
is
the
raised
meander
–
the
multi-curved
protrusion
that
begins
and
ends
at the
top
of the
handle.
The
painted
motifs
seem
more
decorative
than
symbolic
,
though
the
black-and-white
horizontal
band
might
represent
the
Milky
Way
, a
prominent
feature
in
Zuni
astronomy.
If
so
, the
four
diamonds
with
center
dot
motifs
might
well
be
stars.
