EFFIGY
RATTLE
JAR
Shake the rattle
http://www.iwu.edu/library/resources/JWPRattle25_0018.wma
Case Location
0025
Cultural Affiliation
Acoma
Date of Manufacture
ca.
1870-1880
Description
This
bird
effigy
, or
representational
image
,
rattle
jar
has a
bird's
head
at
one
end
and
another
at the
mouth
of the
jar
(or
bottle)
,
facing
in
opposite
directions.
The
flat
beak
of the
latter
suggests
that this
bird
is
a
duck.
The
body
of the
vessel
is
decorated
with
split
leaf
motifs
that
may
indicate
clouds
(water
symbols
for a
water
bird)
, but there are
no
feather
motifs
as are
found
on
artifact
number
24.
A
seed
,
pebble
, or
perhaps
a
tiny
piece
of
pottery
is
closed
in the
hollow
head
in
order
to
make
the
rattling
sound.
Animal
effigies
have been
made
by the
Pueblos
since
ancient
times
, and
various
types
of
rattles
are
used
by
all
the
Pueblos
for
ceremonies
, but there
seems
to be
no
evidence
that
effigy
rattles
such
as this
one
were
used
for
Pueblo
rituals.
