When a young man he became attracted by the mining rush for California, and spent five years there in the search for gold, and was successful in the quest. In 1856, he came to Bloomington for more than forty years, he [was] engaged in business here as a hardware merchant. Charles E. Read was one of the best known, oldest and most highly respected citizens of Bloomington. Of him the highest tribute that can be paid may be written: 'He was in all things and honest man.'
