An Emmett Kelly Christmas
An Emmett Kelly Christmas
TitleAn Emmett Kelly Christmas
SubjectBloomington, Illinois; Circus Acts; Clowns; Kelly, Emmett
Description""Created character of ""Wearie Willie, "" a silent, saddened hobo"" (Pantagraph 11/14/86) Emmett Kelly began his circus career as a trapeze artist, but later found that his true calling was as a clown. He joined the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus in 1941, and was given an unusual amount of freedom. As a result, his act involved him ""wandering"" in and out of acts and throughout the ring. ""And just as quickly as he ""wandered"" into a scene, Willie wandered out or was chased out -- leaving laughs and smiles in the wake of his solemn gait."" Emmett Kelly retired in 1956 to pursue an opportunity as a mascot with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He died March 28, 1979." target="_top">
