DescriptionNellie E. Parham attended the University of Illinois's Library School in 1897. Upon her graduation in 1899, she began her distinctive 41-year career as a Bloomington, Illinois city librarian. Nellie E. Parham largely focused on the needs of children and thus "sought to make libraries an integral part of the educational system by making the community aware of the worth of books." She completely changed the structure of the library system of the City of Bloomington. She established book delivery systems at several schools including Sheridan, Lincoln, Raymond, and St. Patrick's schools in 1903 and built a library at Lake Bloomington so as to better serve the needs of the residents around the lake. In 1930, Nellie E. Parham purchased a "book truck to facilitate the transportation of books to schools and hospitals." She was rewarded for her efforts on June 8, 1936 when Illinois Wesleyan University granted her a degree of Doctor of Literature. After quietly retiring in 1940, Nellie E. Parham passed away July 12, 1945 (Hometown in the Cornbelt p283-287.)
