DescriptionIrene Delroy was born Josephine Sanders in Bloomington, Illinois. Here, she attended both Bloomington Public and University High Schools until she won a part in the ballet of the Chicago Opera Company at the age of 17. She became a Broadway star at the Greenwich Village Follies and "other musical comedies of the 1920's and 1930's." Her career grew and Irene won parts in "talkies" such as "Life of the Party" and "See Naples and Die." In 1931, married real estate tycoon, William Austin ("remembered as one of the Austin car people of England"). He owned two clubs on Long Island and it was rumored that Mayor Walker and "some of Capone's best" could be found there. Irene Delroy was installed as hostess in one of her husband's clubs after her retirement in 1932. She returned to the stage one final time, in 1935, for a part in Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" and was divorced from Austin in 1937. (Price, Herbert T.
