About this Collection

This digital collection presents the complete set of photographs from the Eugene B. Redmond (EBR) Collection at Lovejoy Library relating to the 1995 Million Man March. It is designed as a supplement to the Digital Exhibit Path to "Visible Glory": The Million Man March in the Redmond Collection.

The Digital Exhibit contains selections from this photograph collection and additional digitized materials from the EBR Collection, including selected flyers, manuscripts, and audio files, accompanied by a brief narrative. The Digital Exhibit also includes a bibliography.

Group 1. Pre-March event, ESL
Many men from East St. Louis attended the Million Man March. These photographs show the men and their families preparing and celebrating. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs and other visual materials, accompanied by a short audio excerpt from this event.

Group 2. Pre-March event, SIUE
A departure celebration was also held at the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity house at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. These photographs show speakers and attendees at this event. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs and other visual materials.

Group 3. Getting to the March
The photographs in this group document the trip from St. Louis to Washington, D.C. Eugene Redmond passed a handheld tape recorder around the plane, gathering "impressions" for use in a future book. The Digital Exhibit linked above identifies people in selected photographs and includes audio excerpts from Redmond's recordings on the flights to and from the March.

Group 4. Million Man March
These photographs depict the experience of the Million Man March. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs; flyers advertising the event; and a short audio excerpt of the address by the March's leader, Minister Louis Farrakhan (recorded by Eugene Redmond).

Group 5. Farrakhan in St. Louis
Louis Farrakhan visited St. Louis on October 4, 1997, shortly before the second anniversary of the Million Man March. This group of photographs shows Farrakhan addressing local clergy and community leaders at the Regal Riverfront Hotel. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs and a flyer advertising Farrakhan's visit.

Group 6. Second anniversary
These photographs show St. Louis celebrating the second anniversary of the Million Man March at the base of the Arch, next to the Mississippi River. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs and a flyer for the event.

Group7. Creating the book
Eugene Redmond collaborated with Sherman Fowler and Marcus Atkins to write the book Visible Glory: The Million Man March. These photographs depict the collaborative process. The Digital Exhibit linked above includes selected photographs, a brief audio excerpt of a book meeting, drafts of the book cover, iterative manuscript drafts by Redmond, and other manuscripts and ephemera.
