About This Collection

Collection Description

This digital collection of class photographs was digitized from photographs in the Rush Medical College Class Composites Collection, #4748, at the Rush University Medical Center Archives. The physical collection includes class photographs for almost every year from 1879 to 1942. This digital collection includes class photographs through 1920.

Often, these images contain the only photograph of an individual from their years as a medical student.

Rush Medical College was chartered in 1837 and closed in 1942. It was reactivated in 1969 and continues as part of Rush University, which was founded in 1972.

Note: Photographs for classes from 1917 to 1936 are so-called "Fifth-Year Classes" and are labeled as such in individual records. For those classes, students completed four years at the medical college, plus one year of an internship. The date on the photograph refers to the year that the first four years of education was completed.

Note for researchers outside of Rush: As of August 2012, The Rush University Medical Center Archives is closed to the public and external requests will not be able to be processed.
