|Swedish-American Historical Book Collection (North Park University)|
The purpose of the Swedish-American Historical Book Collection is to bring to an online user out-of-print books on the history and meaning of the Swedish presence in North America. Included are histories, biographies, memoirs, and reference works covering many aspects of the Swedish-American experience since the mid-19th century.
The books made available here were published by or for the Swedish-American Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that grew out of the national 1948 Swedish Pioneer Centennial celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Swedish immigrants in the Midwest. Named the Swedish Pioneer Historical Society until 1983, the Society is devoted to the mission of studying Swedish emigration and the history and culture of the Swedes in North America through research, publications, programs and archives.
The original items digitized in this collection are cataloged in the Swedish-American Archives of Greater Chicago, maintained by the Society, which collects and makes available the rich documentary record of the Swedish-American experience in Chicago. The collections of the Society are deposited at the F. M. Johnson Archives and Special Collections at North Park University in Chicago.
