Historic Maps, 1540-1942
The Map Collection of the Howard and Lois Adelmann Regional History Collection at Lewis University features originals and reproductions of geographical charts from around the world dating from the sixteenth century to almost the present day. The focus of the collection is largely on water transportation, particularly canals, and especially those of North America. The core of the collection are maps displaying the Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848, which traversed northern Illinois from Lake Michigan and to the Illinois River. Historians of the commercial development of the United States early in the country's history and of water transportation will find this map collection of considerable value.
